The process

How to Start

01

Pick a class

Check the schedule and choose the class that fits you or your child.

02

Show up a little early

Arrive around 10–15 minutes before class.

03

Fill out the waiver at the gym

Paperwork is handled in person.

04

Train

That’s it.

No online forms. No payment required. Just pick a class and come in.

Before you come

What to Wear and Bring

We are a no-gi gym, so there is no uniform to buy before your first class.

Wear

Shorts and a t-shirt

Nothing with zippers, buttons, pockets or drawstring loops — fingers and toes catch in them. Athletic shorts and a plain tee are fine.

Optional

Rash guard and spats

Most regulars train in a rash guard. Useful, not required. Get one after you have decided to keep coming, not before.

Bring

Water and a towel

There is no equipment to buy. A mouthguard is worth having once you start rolling regularly.

Leave

Jewellery and shoes

Rings, earrings and watches come off. Shoes come off at the edge of the mat and go back on to walk anywhere else.

On the day

What Happens When You Arrive

Do I need experience?

No

Most people who walk in have never grappled. Beginners train in the same All Levels classes as everyone else and coaches scale what they give you. You are not waiting for a beginner-only class to open up.

First few minutes

Waiver and a quick tour

Someone will meet you at the front, hand you the waiver, and show you where to change and where to leave your shoes.

During class

You get paired up

A coach puts you with someone experienced rather than leaving you to find a partner. You drill slowly. Nobody is going to crank on you on day one.

Rolling

You can sit out

If live rounds are on and you would rather watch the first day, say so. That is normal and nobody will make it weird.

Mat rules

Hygiene

Grappling is close-contact. These are not house preferences, they are how a mat stays clean.

Every session

Clean clothes

Fresh gear each time. Not yesterday’s rash guard out of the bag.

Before class

Nails cut short

Fingernails and toenails. This is the single most common cause of cuts and scratches.

Always

Shoes off the mat

And shoes back on to walk off it, including to the bathroom.

If in doubt

Sit out when sick

Ringworm, staph, any skin infection or open cut — stay off the mat until it has cleared or is properly covered.

For parents

Bringing a Kid In

Same process, a few extra things worth knowing. Full kids program

Waiver

A parent has to sign

Come in with your child on the first day so the waiver can be signed on the spot.

Which class

Go by age

Mini Goons is ages 5–9, Goons is 10–15. Neither needs any experience. If your child is right on the line, a coach will place them.

Watching

Stay if you want

Parents are welcome to watch any class. Most stay for the first few.

No striking

It is grappling only

No punching, no kicking, no board breaking. Kids roll live against partners their own size with a coach running the round. Classes run one hour.
